Claire Biribawa is a Substance Use Epidemiologist, who focuses on understanding the distribution and determinants of substance use in low-income countries, primarily in Uganda, where this is under-researched.
She holds a Master of Public Health from Makerere University and currently is a permanent member of the faculty at Makere’s School of Public Health.
Claire has also played a pivotal role in establishing a surveillance system for substance use disorders (SUDs) in Kampala, Uganda, providing a crucial framework for monitoring and responding to evolving substance use patterns.
Claire is currently pursuing a joint PhD in Public Health (Makerere University – Uganda) and Educational Sciences (Ghent University – Belgium), which is focused on advancing the quality of treatment services for SUDs in Uganda.
The expected completion is in 2026 and the research topic is Advancing the Quality of treatment services for Substance Use Disorders in Uganda through the measurement and monitoring of patient-reported outcomes and experiences.
