Office of the National Student Ombudsman

The office of the National Student Ombudsman (NSO) commenced on 1 February 2025 and provides an additional mechanism to enable higher education (HE) students throughout Australia to resolve student complaints. It describes on its website its role as being independent and impartial with powers to investigate a broad range of issues, involving actions taken by HE providers relating to a number of concerns, such as –

  • Concerns about student safety and welfare, including situations involving gender-based violence, discrimination, racism, antisemitism and Islamophobia
  • Course administration, such as timeliness and accuracy of information provided to students
  • Teaching provision and facilities, such as sufficiency of staffing to meet the needs of students
  • The fairness and effectiveness of student complaints processes
  • Reasonable adjustments for students with disability or experiencing special circumstances

This slide presentation of some of the features of the NSO was developed by Greg Swensen and Jackie Wambui , to provide an overview of features of the related regulatory framework and approaches and processes available to HE students studying at both public and private universities and colleges.

This paper may also be of particular assistance for those enrolled with private education providers (PEPs) in the Australian HE sector and with additional information pertinent to the framework that operates in Western Australia (WA).
